Aerobic Septic Systems (ATUs) in Comal County

If you are buying, building or replacing on acreage in Comal County, you are probably getting an aerobic system whether you planned to or not. Here is what that actually means — mechanically, financially, and legally.

Why they dominate here

A conventional septic system is mostly passive. Solids settle in a tank; the liquid flows out to a drainfield and percolates down through soil, which does the real biological filtering. It is cheap and reliable, and it depends completely on having enough decent soil.

Much of the Texas Hill Country does not. Under a shallow layer of soil sits fractured limestone that water runs straight through — no absorption, no filtration, direct pathway toward the aquifer below. That is why roughly half of all new septic systems permitted in Texas today are aerobic treatment units, and why the share is higher still in Comal County and its neighbours.

An aerobic treatment unit moves the treatment out of the soil and into the tank. A compressor injects air, aerobic bacteria digest the waste far more thoroughly than they can in an oxygen-starved conventional tank, and the effluent is disinfected before it leaves. What comes out is clean enough to be distributed at or near the surface — which is the whole point, because there is nowhere deep to put it.

An aerobic treatment unit does inside the tank what soil does in a conventional system. That is why it works on rock — and why it needs power, a control panel, and the maintenance contract Texas law requires.

How the system is put together

  1. Trash tank / pretreatment. Solids settle out first, as in a conventional system.
  2. Aeration chamber. An air compressor bubbles oxygen through the wastewater. This is where most of the treatment happens.
  3. Clarifier. Remaining solids settle and are returned for further treatment.
  4. Pump tank. Holds treated effluent until there is enough to dose the field.
  5. Disinfection. Chlorine tablets or a UV unit, inline before anything is discharged. Some systems place this ahead of the pump tank rather than after it — either is normal.
  6. Distribution. Either spray heads that irrigate a designated area, or subsurface drip lines.
  7. Control panel and alarm. Usually mounted on the garage or near the system. Tells you when treatment has stopped.

Owning an aerobic system is a legal commitment, not just a purchase.

Texas Health & Safety Code 366.0515 requires every aerobic system owner to hold an active maintenance contract with a TCEQ-licensed provider — three inspections a year, reports filed with the county within 14 days of each visit, and fines of up to $100 a day for non-compliance. Living with one

  • Do not ignore the alarm. It signals that treatment has stopped, which means partly treated wastewater. Call your maintenance provider.
  • Keep the power on. No power, no aeration. Extended outages mean the system needs checking afterwards.
  • Keep chlorine topped up if yours is a tablet system. Running dry means undisinfected effluent going onto your yard.
  • Keep the spray area clear. Do not park on it, build on it, or plant a vegetable garden in it.
  • Watch what goes down the drain. Bleach in quantity, paint, solvents, grease and "flushable" wipes all damage the biology or clog the mechanics.
  • Keep your service records. You will need proof of a valid contract when you sell. See septic inspections at transfer.

When something goes wrong

The signals worth acting on immediately: a persistent alarm, sewage smells near the tank or spray field, soggy ground or standing water where there should not be any, unusually green spongy grass over the system, slow drains or gurgling indoors, and cloudy or foul-smelling spray discharge — the last of which means treatment has failed outright. What is the difference between an aerobic and a conventional septic system?

A conventional system settles solids in a tank and lets the liquid soak away through a gravity drainfield, where soil does the final treatment. An aerobic system pumps air into the wastewater so oxygen-loving bacteria break it down far more completely, disinfects the result, and then distributes it — usually through spray heads on the surface or drip lines just under it. The aerobic system does the treatment the soil cannot.

Why does my Comal County lot need an aerobic system?

Because much of the Hill Country is thin soil over fractured limestone. A gravity drainfield needs soil that absorbs and filters; limestone drains straight through without treating anything, which is precisely the risk the Edwards Aquifer rules exist to prevent. Where the soil will not do the work, the machine has to.

How much electricity does an aerobic system use?

It runs an air compressor more or less continuously plus a pump intermittently, so it is a real but modest addition to your power bill. The more important consequence is that a power outage stops treatment — which is why the systems have alarms.

What does the alarm on my aerobic system mean?

It means something has stopped working and treatment is compromised. The usual causes are a power failure, a failed pump, a failed aerator, low air pressure, a faulty timer, or clogged spray heads. If you have checked power, floats and aerator and a high-water alarm is still sounding, it is most often the pump. Do not ignore it and do not just silence it.

Can I service an aerobic system myself?

No. Texas requires an active maintenance contract with a TCEQ-licensed maintenance provider, and that provider must file inspection reports with the county. Homeowner maintenance does not satisfy the requirement.
